Cooper Avenue Undergoing Overhaul

Construction is in full swing on Cooper Avenue to rehab the underpass between 74th and 79th streets that dips below the Long Island Rail Road tracks in Glendale.

Traffic should normally stay open in both directions even with lane closures during the span of the project, which started in January and is expected to continue until June.

Crews are replacing parapet walls above the tunnel’s retaining walls that were so eroded that steel rebar was visible, Gary Giordano, district manager of Community Board 5, said.

Right now, the south side is under construction where the retaining wall is being rehabbed with new wire meshing and concrete, Giordano said. The north side will follow.
