Instead of complaining about the man and his stench, how aboyut offering him a helping hand. Maybe take up a collection for him to be able to stay at a motel for a month to clean up and get some clothes and maybe find some kind of job. What do you want him to do ? Kill him self? The city isn’t going to help him he is not a foreigner, They can get welfare, food stamps, medical immediately. A former tax paying citizen can’t get a hand in this city.
The man has experience as a tranamiaaion mechanic help him to get a new start. I would make a contribution to help him, but as a woman, I wouldn’t be able to physically come along side of him to get things going. I think a man or a group of men would be better. Maybe one of the local churches have clothing pantry to help him be able to start looking for a job. There are going to be more people who need help in this city and this country. When are we going to get out of ourselves and help each other. Many people live paycheck to paycheck. One slip and they are out on the street. If the man has a substance abuse problem help him to get into detox. If he won’t cooperate in the help that is a different story. But I think the neighborhood should help. It could happen to us. There but for the Grace of God go I.

First of all, Crowley pulled her funding for the St. Saviour’s site, and that is why the Department of Parks and Recreation dropped its bid. This needs to be made clear. Second, Crowley did not say that negotiations were on hold with Martin Luther School. She said they wanted to wait until after graduation to make a decision, knowing full well that the decision had already been made to NOT sell the property. We need our libraries now more than ever. North Forest Park is undergoing extensive repairs to its’ roof, and Elmhurst and Glen Oaks are being replaced with bigger and better branches, and Queensboro Hill is also being renovated.

Is this guy still complaining? He is the only one who is bothered by this place, in fact he is the only one driving the effort. This place is terrific and it’s a breath of fresh air to finally have a nice place on Grand Avenue that is worth going to. I wish we had more places like this on Grand Avenue instead of lousy salons and 99 Cent stores. But it’s people like this guy who scares away decent businesses that will actually contribute to the community and generate revenue.

Reactivation of the Rockaway Beach Branch has been turned down time and time again. It would be a massively expensive project and no proponent of it has shown that there is a real need — that there is REAL ridership that can be counted on. That line ws closed because of lack of ridership and it was passed over for reactivation when the Air Train was built for that and cost issues. Few of those living in the Rockaways commute to Manhatten, let alone midtown. If their comute was an issue they would be living elseware and have plenty of options to move to a more convenient locale. There is a fetish of focusing on a midtown commute that simply does not jive with reality or the real needs of the communities along its length. Meanwhile, The QueensWay is not being proposed just for “pleasure” or by officionados. Bikes are transportation, not toys. Parks are essential to quality of life not luxuries. This has been proven a thousand times over all over the world. A bikeway, particulalry once NYC Bikeshare reaches Queens, would provide a real, affordable and safe means of transportation for the over 54% of New Yorkers whose daily trips are less than 3 miles in length and who are NOT commutting to midtown Manhattan. The neighborhoods along the line need LOCAL transportation. Those streets are not clogged with people going to Midtown. To suggest that a train carrying a small minority of people to Midtown and back during the few hours of rush hour would alleviate the almost constant traffic problems on Crossbay and Woodhaven Boulevards is absurd. We need good local transportation and that includes biking. Moreover with the addition of the Casino and eventually a Convention Center we need to build a means of keeping the money of those visitors here in Central and Southern Queens rather than building a qiuck way for those Convention goers to carry their money off to midtown. With a bike way and linear park, Convention business can be channeled into local tourism with local economic benefits. A train doesn’t do that. A train provides a qiuck escape without making our neighborhoods better to live in, without helping our businesses, without actually taking more cars off the street.

I was there when it happened. You are incorrect in the statement that there were no lights – i went to cross the street and because I looked before crossing – I SAW THE LIGHTS on the cop car and stepped back because I knew I wasnt making it across….as i stepped back the man ran into the middle of the street at the same time the cop car was passing.

Central Amusement would be the perfect operators for this. I, along with many other young families, would love to make this a destination for our kids. With the playground there, the skatepark, tons of parking, the bandshell – kiddie rides and a preserved carousel would complete the area. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll finally see this reopened.

Hate to point out all the mistakes in this article. Woodhaven Avenue? Don’t you mean Woodhaven Blvd? Also, it would reduce the three roads into Woodhaven to two, not one, but that would still greatly inconvenience many residents returning home from Ozone Park and cause worse traffic on the two remaining thru roads.

I have been researching Bayside and its neighboring cemeteries, Mokom Sholom and Acacia for more than 25 years. I have a database of thousands of burials there. I know Anthony Pisciotta and his work. We are in touch regularly. He heard of me and contacted me years ago. I can no longer go through the cemeteries as I did when I was younger and Anthony has become my legs in this job. I know Bayside and its nieghbors for many more years as I have relatives in all 3 cemeteries. The conditions have been going on for many more years than I know about myself. I met people over the years who grew up in the area and who knew of the history of the cemeteries. They mostly thought it was 1 cemetery not 3. Bayside and Mokom Sholom have been neglected for more than 50 years. Acacia began its descent when the synagogue that owned it was sold by its president. Something has to be done. Our history is in those cemeteries. These were people, human beings, who should be treated with dignity and respect. Open caskets, pieces of bone lying around and skulls staring at you should not be normal. I found a jawbone at Bayside myself many years ago. Bayside is a condition waiting to happen. The huge overgrowth and undergrowth begs for undesirables and vandals. This should be remov ed. It got there because of Shaare Tsedek’s irrepsonsibility not because of vandals. The conditions encouraged vandalism. Shaare Tsedek MUST take responsibility for what it has done. They used money meant for the care of the graves. They should be forced to take care of them. They sold the plots, yes, that was what every cemetery did. This was the way to make money. Selling the plots contracted them to take care of the cemetery. The cemetery is a whole. They don’t even take care of the plots that belong to them. The congregants at Shaare Tsedek are not connected to Bayside and don’t care about it. It has been for sale for years but no one wants to buy it as there is no money in it. Jewish law says sgraves can be used once. Bayside has reached itss end. There are almost no empty graves available. Every cemetery operating under Jewish law comes to this point. Something must be done to preserve these cemeteries.
