Man Guilty in Stabbing Death of Pregnant Girlfriend

A 38-year-old Queens man was convicted this week of second-degree murder and other charges for the stabbing death of his girlfriend — who was nine months pregnant — inside of her South Ozone Park apartment in 2008.

The 25-year old victim — who was stabbed approximately 20 to 30 times in her stomach and torso — was murdered on her due date. Her baby did not survive.

The defendant, Derrick W. Redd of 87-05 166th Street in Jamaica, was convicted this week of second- degree murder (in- tentional), fourth REDD degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree abortion following a jury trial before Queens Supreme Court Justice Daniel Lewis. “It is incomprehensible that this defendant would unleash such a vicious attack on his girlfriend and his unborn child on the date the baby was expected to come into the world — which also happened to be the birthday of the victim’s father,” said Queens D.A. Richard Brown. “What should have been a joyous day has been forever changed into an occasion of grief. The defendant could have walked away and left this young woman and her unborn child but instead he unleashed a brutal attack. He must be sentenced to the maximum time in prison in order to punish him and to protect society.”

Redd faces 25 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on Nov. 22.
