Editorial: What are Cabbies Thinking?

City taxi drivers flocked to Albany to protest a proposal that would allow certain livery cabs in the outer boroughs the right to make legal street pickups. There are various problems with the proposal, and some communities feel it could increase traffic around the area.

But right now, that’s not the issue we have a problem with. What right do taxi drivers have to complain that the move would hurt their business? Hail a cab in Midtown and ask to be taken to Howard Beach or Middle Village; you’d be laughed out the door (even though that’s illegal).

Yellow cabs don’t leave Manhattan anyway. Any new service for outer borough street hails would not be in direct competition.
