Community Says ‘Thanks’ To Veterans

Veterans were honored last Saturday at state Senator Joe Addabbo’s third annual Veterans’ BBQ in Howard Beach.

Throughout the course of the afternoon, veterans from all over Addabbo’s district enjoyed a sunny day and some burgers, hot dogs and sodas outside Addabbo’s Howard Beach office on 160th Avenue and 102nd Street.

“This is just a way of saying thanks,” Addabbo said.

The food and beverages were provided by many local businesses and community groups. The VFW Post 2565, Ragtime Deli, Russo’s on the Bay, Sal’s Meat Market, Old Howard Dairy, Brothers Deli, Sugar Bun Bakery and Carvel Ice Cream all donated materials.

“You mention the word veteran, and they’re all ready to do what they can to help,” Addabbo said.

Combat veterans John Chichester, Andy Peri and Pierre Grace enjoyed the day and were glad to see people supporting veterans.

“It’s fantastic. The Senator has always been a friend to the veterans,” Grace said.

The three Vietnam War veterans are also members of the Woodhaven group, Vets Helping Vets. Chichester, the group’s director and a former Army general, said his group works to make sure veterans get the services and help they deserve.

Entertainment for the event was provided by Rock’n’ Randy and Johnny Christ.
