Thousands of Electronics Safely Recycled

In an effort to give residents a place to safely dispose unwanted electronics and reusable clothing items, State Senator Joseph Addabbo (D-Howard Beach) and Assemblyman Mike Miller (D-Woodhaven) hosted a recycling collection event on Sunday at Forest Park’s bandshell parking lot in Woodhaven.

Hundreds of people showed up with old electronics and car batteries.  Reusable items like wearable clothing, coats, shoes, handbags, linens and residential carpeting were collected by Salvation Army and Long Island Carpet Recycling trucks that were at the event.

Miller said that it was gratifying for him to see the number of residents that came with cars full of electronics that they were willing to donate.

“It was something for Queens to be proud of…these electronics otherwise would be in our landfills, creating the worst health results for all,” Miller said.

Addabbo, who has hosted four electronics recycle events since taking office in 2009, echoed Miller’s sentiment saying that he’s glad to give residents an option to dispose of things that otherwise would be garbage.

“I’m grateful to have been given the opportunity to host another such event for my residents so that they may conveniently and properly dispose of their unwanted items, after cleaning out their closets, bookcases and spare rooms every fall or spring,” Addabbo said.

Peter DeLucia, director of special events for Addabbo, said that the event was so successful that he expects to work with Addabbo on a fifth recycling event next spring.
