Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association Celebrates 40 Years

Last Friday, the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association celebrated its 40th Anniversary at Joe Abbraciamento restaurant. The WRBA is constantly fighting to improve the quality of life for its residents. Most recently, the group was on the forefront in the fight to keep Engine Company 294 open. Included below is a letter from WRBA President Ed Wendell thanking those who helped support the organization:

Last week, the residents of Woodhaven gathered at Joe Abbraciamento to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association.  The evening was a smashing success on many fronts.  First of all, everyone had a wonderful time, enjoyed a great dinner and some lucky people walked away with wonderful prizes, including a big screen television and over $600 in cash prizes.

It was a high-energy event and many people came out to celebrate Woodhaven as well as the achievements of those the WRBA were privileged to honor.  Our Man of the Year, Assemblyman Mike Miller, was joined by friends and family as well as a large, energetic contingent of Glendale Kiwanians.  Our Woman of the Year, longtime Woodhavenite Eleanor Errante, was joined by a large group of close friends and family.  And it seemed like the entire Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corp was in attendance as the WRHVAC was inducted into Woodhaven’s Hall of Fame.

And it was an evening to acknowledge and celebrate our history as there were numerous businesses that have served Woodhaven for over a century including Neir’s Tavern (Est. 1829), Ohlert-Ruggiere (Est. 1895), Walker Funeral Home (Est. 1899), and this year’s Business of the Year, The Leader Observer (Est. 1909).

Due to the support and generosity of many of the people mentioned above, as well as the residents’ of Woodhaven, the WRBA was able to raise over $4,000 which will be used to continue the good work which we have become known for.  Over $750 of that total came from residents who could not attend the fundraiser, but generously gave amounts ranging from $5 to $100.

It is with deep appreciation that we publicly thank everyone who contributed to this year’s fundraiser – we will reward your good will with some outstanding efforts over the next year.  For those residents of Woodhaven who would like to be more involved in their community, please visit our website at woodhaven-nyc.org, or call us at 718-296-3735.  Our next Town Hall meeting is on Saturday, October 15th at 1 PM, at 78-15 Jamaica Avenue.
