Officer Foils Video Game Theft

For his role in arresting a man involved in a late-night video game robbery last week, Officer William Chan of the 102nd Precinct was named as November’s Officer of the Month at the precinct‘s monthly meeting on Tuesday night at the Moose Club in Richmond Hill..

Officer Chan’s citation came on the heels of his participation in the arrest of one of two individuals who had assaulted a Richmond Hill resident and stolen his newly-purchased video game in the early morning hours of Nov. 8 at 103rd Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard.

According to Sgt. Joseph DeMarco of the 102 Precinct, who presented the award to Officer Chan, two individuals wearing dark clothes stole a copy of the ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ video game from the victim. The wildly popular video game reportedly sold $400 million in its first day after being released at a special nationwide midnight sale at video game outlets.

After police responded to a 2:15 a.m. call for help from the victim, whose name was not released, Officer Chan and another officer—whose name was unavailable—searched the blocks surrounding the crime scene.

Their search turned out to be successful after the officers observed suspicious male changing clothes on 118th Street. The male was seen changing into a new set of clothes while discarding the dark clothes he was seen wearing.

Officer Chan and his partner apprehended the suspect and arrested him after the victim positively identified the suspect as one of the two men who assaulted him.

No other information was available on whether the video game was returned or if the second suspect was caught.

“I’d like to congratulate Officer Chan on a job well done,” Sgt. DeMarco said at the meeting.

City Councilman Eric Ulrich also congratulated Officer Chan on his work in receiving the award.
