Ascan Avenue Named for Geraldine Ferraro

Ascan Avenue in Forest Hills will soon be co-named for Geraldine Ferraro, Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz announced Tuesday night.

Koslowitz was speaking to a room full of residents just off of Ascan Avenue at the Forest Hills Civic Association Meeting when she announced the news honoring the former congresswoman who passed away last year.

“We’re naming a street after her at Ascan and Austin Street because she lived in this neighborhood,” Koslowitz said. “She lived in the gardens. And she used to shop Austin Street. I met her many times out of the shops on Austin Street.” Geraldine Ferraro represented Forest Hills and other Queens neighborhoods in the U.S. House of Representatives for six years between 1997 and 1985.

She’s remembered for being the first female vice presidential candidate for a major political party. Ferraro died in March, 2011.
Koslowitz said the co-naming will take place some time in the spring.
