School Safety Officer Arrested on Gunpoint Rape Charges

Police arrested an off-duty school safety agent in his Ridgewood apartment on April 5 for allegedly raping a woman at gunpoint in Brooklyn.

Tommy Johnson, a 28-year-old NYPD employee, is charged with rape, burglary, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and a laundry list of other offenses that stem from an alleged incident with his ex girlfriend.

School safety officers are peace officers employed by the NYPD, but neither the NYPD or Department of Education (DOE) have released what school or schools Johnson patrolled.

Prosecutors allege that over the summer, Johnson repeatedly threatened his ex girlfriend, and eventually raped her in her Brooklyn apartment.

He reportedly showed up in front of her home in July and pulled a gun on her, said she was “messing around with someone” and threatened to kill her.

Over the next few months, it escalated, the woman told police. Johnson allegedly returned multiple times, pointing guns, making threats and hitting her.

The victim told investigators that in one incident he said, “You’re going to make me hurt someone. Do you think I care if the cops are around? By the time they come, you’ll already be on the ground.”

At the end of March, Johnson raped her, the woman told police.

He allegedly followed her into her apartment and began punching her, forcing her to remove her clothes and filmed the rape on his cell phone.

Two days later, a sergeant working out of the internal affairs division showed up to Johnson’s apartment at 563 Woodward Ave. to investigate the allegations.

He found two loaded handguns—one with the serial number scratched out.

Johnson’s arrest comes the week after a jury deadlocked on a rape charge against another 28-year-old NYPD employee, Michael Pena.

He was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at gunpoint.

Over the last nine weeks, there have been seven arrests of teachers, teachers’ aids and other DOE employees related to sexual charges.

Although Johnson is employed by the NYPD, not the DOE, he does work at a school. He is not authorized to carry a gun.

He is due back in Queens Criminal Court for gun possession charges on May 8 and the lengthy list of other charges in Brooklyn Criminal Court on May 9.
