A play date between a mother and her daughter turned into a bloody scene Tuesday morning, leaving 9-year-old Briani Davis clinging to life at Jamaica Hospital and her mother in police custody, charged with her stabbing.

Police said Anne Carimbocas and her daughter were at a house on 176th Street off 145th Avenue in Springfield Gardens for a visit, when something went terribly wrong.

It is believed the child was stabbed four times, with an 8-inch chef’s knife, resulting in wounds to her head, shoulders and back. Published reports detail the accounts of eyewitnesses who watched in horror as EMS workers removed the child from the house.

Lindsay Fortune, a neighbor, heard the emergency responders screaming, “Hurry—It’s a baby, it’s a baby!” Fortune told reporters the 9-year-old was carried out wrapped in a bloody sheet. “…She was alive but not too coherent. … kind of wobbly, like she was trying to rock back and forth.” EMS rushed the girl to the trauma center at Jamaica Hospital where doctors performed surgery on Tuesday afternoon.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the incident came to an end when a man intervened to try and wrestle the knife from a seemingly crazed Carimbocus. “He was cut on the leg with a knife. He actually holds the woman in custody until the police arrive.”

The suspect was moaning and incoherent when loaded into a squad car bound for the 105th Precinct. One neighbor described her appearance after she was handcuffed and taken from the house by police. “She had her head laid back …She looked insane… like something went wrong mentally.” She was later taken to North Shore LIJ Hospital to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Briani Davis is in critical but stable condition at Jamaica Hospital.

Detectives assigned to the case said they are trying to establish a motive for the mother’s attack on her daughter.
