Rockaway Man Convicted in Crowd Shooting

Paul Williams, a resident of Far Rockaway, was convicted this week of opening fire on a crowd in Sep- tember 2009, killing one man and wounding another, has been sen- tenced to 50 years to life in prison.

District Attorney Brown said that according to trial testimony, on September 14, 2009, at 1315 Augustina Avenue in Far Rockaway, Williams was armed with an assault rifle and fired 29 rounds into a crowd of people at the location.

The victim, Ronald Washington of Far Rockaway, 28, was fatally struck four times in the upper torso.

Williams also shot Todd Jamison, 45, of Cedarhurst, in the leg, resulting in the amputation of his leg above the knee.

Shortly after the fatal shooting, Williams fled the scene but was captured five months later in North Carolina after another arrest for an
unrelated incident. In a press release, Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said, “Taking into consideration the defendant’s wanton disregard for human life, the lengthy prison sentence imposed today by the Court is more than justified in order to punish him for his actions and protect society.”
Brown hopes that the sentence will send a clear message that ran- dom gun violence is not tolerated in Queens.

Williams is 36 of 1015 Hartman Lane in Far Rockaway. He has been held in custody without bail since his arrest in February 2010.

In March of 2012, Williams was convicted of second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, and first degree assault following a trial presided over Queens Supreme Court Justice Gregory L. Lasak.
