Long-Awaited Sewer Fix for FH

Forest Hills should see dryer roads during rain storms as the Departments of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Design and Construction (DDC) completed a $24 million renovation, which will help flooding in that neighborhood as well as revamp its water distribution system.

Seven new storm sewer lines were built in Forest Hills including ones on 110th Street between 62nd drive and 64th Road, 62nd Drive between 112th Street and 108th Street and 112th Street between Horace Harding Expressway and 63rd Avenue.

According to a press release from the DEP, about one mile of new sewer lines and half a mile of water mains were installed as well as 55 catch basins and 49 manholes that were added.

A 2,400 foot section of a water distribution main was also replaced as part of the project. The new main increases reliability for homeowners as well as shorten service disruption when other water mains are being repaired in the future.

Eric MacFarlane, deputy commissioner of the DDC, said that Forest Hills should benefit greatly from the multi-million dollar project.

“These new roadways, catch basins, and sewers will reduce flooding, improve water delivery, and yield a more attractive streetscape for the residents of Forest Hills,” he said in a statement.

Carter Strickland, commissioner of the DEP, said that, in the next 10 years, the agency will invest over half a billion dollars to improve sewer infrastructure in Queens.

“The more than 200 projects we have in the works will help better manage storm water throughout Queens and significantly reduce combined sewer overflow, sewer backups, and street flooding,” Strickland said in a statement.
