A one-armed man who was wanted for taking a United States Parcel (UPS) package from the front porch of a Woodhaven home was arrested last week.
According to police, Carlos Peralta, a 44-year-old Hispanic man who lives on Nicolls Avenue in Jackson Heights, was hand-cuffed
on Thursday, September 6 and charged with petit larceny, which is a misdemeanor. Cops also say that he was arrested inside of a home on 118th Street in Richmond Hill. That street is located between Jamaica Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard and is only 1.6 miles from where the crime took place.
Back on July 23rd, Peralta was caught on a surveillance pulling his car onto 86th Avenue in Woodhaven and eventually walking through the front gate of the house and taking the UPS package.
Shortly after the incident happened, the Woodhaven Residents Block Association (WRBA) put out a press release with information and several photos and the video of Peralta strolling through the home’s front entrance and taking the package.
WRBA president Ed Wendell said that the civic is elated that the bandit was caught and the camera that the residents had outside their house played a huge role in leading to Peralta’s arrest almost two months after it occurred. “It really points out the importance of home surveillance cameras,” he said.
Wendell added that he is now hoping to install a camera outside of his home and encourages other residents to do the same, as it serves as a strong deterrent for crooks who are thinking of taking a possession like Peralta did or breaking and entering into someone’s house.
