Boy Scouts Thomas and Matthew Caiazza of Troop 139 were honored at a ceremony held in St. Helen’s School last Saturday for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr., Councilmember Eric Ulrich and Congressman Bob Turner all made appearances to recognize the accomplishments of these young Scouts.

The boys were named Eagle Scouts – the highest honor in Boy Scouts – after they each completed a required Eagle Scout Project. Matthew sent care packages to U.S. Marines serving in Afghanistan, supplying over 100 boxes to troops overseas. Thomas collected over 650 new and used eyeglasses and 19 pairs of hearing aids for the N.J. Lion’s Club, which recycles them to the needy.

Congressman Turner helped introduce the boys into the Eagle Scouts at Saturday’s ceremony.
“Matthew Caiazza and Thomas Caiazza have both met all of the necessary requirements to become Eagle Scouts. This is no easy task,” Turner said to family, friends, and other scouts at the ceremony. “These two young men have demonstrated they have all the skills necessary to achieve a level of scouting that many do not.”

He also noted the hard work and dedication that comes with becoming an Eagle Scout, citing such famous members as Neil Armstrong, President Gerald Ford, ballplayer Hank Aaron and director Steven Spielberg.

“The skills these two new Eagle Scouts have mastered will help make them the leaders of tomorrow along with former Eagle Scouts who are the leaders of yesterday and today,” Turner said.
Sen. Addabbo also presented the boys with New York State Senate citations for their accomplishments.
