‘Walking Man’ Eddie Yost Dead at 86

Former Mets third base coach Eddie Yost, 86, who was a native of Ozone Park and attended John Adams High School, died on October 16 in Weston, Massachusetts.

After graduating from John Adams High School, he earned a Bachelor Degree of Education and Master Degree of Physical Education from New York University. During that time, he was drafted by the Washington Senators in 1944 at the age of 17.

Yost was nicknamed “The Walking Man” throughout his career because of his talent for drawing base on balls. He had an 18-year career with Major League Baseball, also playing for the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels.

When he stopped playing ball, Yost became a third base coach with the Washington Senators, New York Mets and then the Boston Red Sox. He retired in Boston in 1984 at the age of 58.
