DECEMBER YEAR IN REVIEW

  • Our Lady of Grace Church in Howard Beach continued to celebrate mass in the school auditorium as they renained unable to get church doors open. The damage  was described as “extensive,” by Fr. Rucando and included the pews, sent out to be restored, and a brand-new floor. Structurally, the main building of the church was sound. Recovery was slowed by lack of sufficient electrical power.
  • The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman, Joe Lhota, announced his resignation from the transportation giant at the same time as the announcement confiriming his interest in a mayoral run. Republicans around the city and state thrilled at the prospect of what’s being dubbed a legitimate candidacy.
  • Public Advocate Bill de Blasio blasted the City Human Resources Administration for not providing more emergency food assistance to those affected by Superstorm Sandy.
  • will resign at the end of the year to likely launch a mayoral bid on the Republican line, thrilling some Republicans who have been hungering for an experienced candidate to rival a progressive Democrat, Joe Lhota.
  • The majority of the damage to the church came from the flood waters that the storm produced.
  • Duane Reade/Walgreens, which has a store on Cross Bay Boulevard in Howard Beach, donated $25,000 to the West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department. The firehouse has serves one of the communities hit hard by Hurricane Sandy
  • Russo’s on the Bay opened its heart as well as its doors to thousands of children for a very specuial Christmas week in two separate events.  Organizers at the cateres set up a day for free pictures with Santa or Frosty the Snowman in a storybook setting. Of course hot chocolate, gingerbread men and other treats were enjoted as well.
  • Catholic school students affected by Hurricane Sandy spent a day at Russo’s as part of a special Christmas gift. Frank Russo personally hosted a Christmas breakfast/lunch party for more than 1,300 students from four area schools devastated by the storm.
  • Visitors walked into a winter wonderland of Russo proportions, filled with clowns, magicians, dancers, and Santa. Appetites were charged up for a selectin of breakfast foods, pasta and a host of confections including ice cream sundae stations, popcorn machines and a cotton candy maker. Students  also enjoyed a photo booth and a show from Nick the Balloonatic.
  • Super storm Sandy, which caused death, destruction and billions in property damage, will not be our last and definitely not our least, according to a Queens College professor Stephen Pekar, who’s made his life’s work studying the effects of climate change.
  • Woodhaven Residents Block Association (WRBA) called for the redistricting commission to draw Woodhaven into a single district. about what was the proposed City CouncilOne proposal has the map with Woodhaven split into two districts, which the group says is unacceptable.
  • Community Board 6 announced that the beacon program at Junior High School 190 in Forest Hills  is again in danger of losing its after-school program.
  • The automobile was one of the  easily overlooked casualties of Superstorm Sandy., but The Forum urged readers not to be a casualty of many unscroupulous practices when buying a used car. Readers were cautioned about “title washing” which gives a false history of the vehicle and hides salt water damages.
  • Scams continued to crop up post Sandy including a solicitation letter sent out by GC Environmental, Inc., a private company with no affiliation with the State of New York, falsely claiming to be from the “Department of Remediation,” the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) The letter states that homeowners would be fined $25,000 per day for failing to clean up their residences from oil spills after the storm..
