MARCH YEAR IN REVIEW

  • Ray Lazier Lengend, 40, of Queens Village was indicted on a 36-count indictment for throwing glass bottles filled with gasoline at five buildings in Queens—two of which were religious houses of worship.
  • A plan to rezone more than 200 blocks collectively in Woodhaven and Richmond Hill officially got underway. Public review has begun for a 229-block rezoning in the Woodhaven and Richmond Hill neighborhoods in central Queens—which would affect more than 70 blocks inWoodhaven and more than 150 in Richmond Hill.   • Lucille Gross, 72, of Ozone Park, an great-grandmother, mother of three and longtime resident of South Queens died last week after being struck by a car as she was crossing an accident-prone Howard Beach intersection—which police have tried to get the city to address for years.
  • The Forest Hills Carousel, which hasn’t spun for the public since 2008 finally has some good news coming. The historic attraction was officially set to reopen in the spring.
  • Peninsula Hospital Center announced the suspension of lab-based medical services at their Rockaways-based medical facility as a result of state inspectors finding that the hospital’s clinical laboratory services had major deficiencies One of the three main hospitals in the area, it has been ordered to shut down several major operations after its clinical labs failed to meet state medical standards.
  • But Nearly two weeks after closing its lab due to a scathing health report from the state, the hospital announced the lab should be reopening later in the month. Operations at the hospital were suspended at the Rockaway-based hospital, following the state Department of Health (DOH) issuing a report citing more than 60 deficiencies in the administration and operations in the clinical labs of the hospital.
  • Among those deficiencies listed in the report were that the hospital’s labs workers lacked proper training, failed to store blood in the lab at recommended temperatures, did not keep recommended steps to run its microbiology lab, kept expired plasma in the blood bank freezer and failed to secure medical waste.
  • The Lindenwood Alliance presented it’s first Community Action Award to Captain Thomas Pascale of the 106th Precinct. Pascale was touted by the Alliance as the person responsible “for the decrease in crime our community has seen recently.” (Photo 1)
  • Complaints from Ozone Park residents saw a positive response from Councilman Eric Ulrich after he funded a program that will see residents in Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Howard Beach and Woodhaven get free repairs to the sidewalk and tree pit areas right outside their houses.
  • About 317 spots will be fixed and it’s all paid for by the city council, costing $1.1 million in total, according to the Department of Parks and Recreation.
  • Forest Hills veterans felt like they were under attack from the city when health inspectors began treating American Legion Post 1424 on Metropolitan Avenue as though it were a restaurant—posting a C grade writing fines for a total of $4,900 for food-handling violations.
  • The Post was penalized for not having a washbasin next to the grill and not having a lock on the ice chest.
  • Vincent Mineo, 29, of Ozone Park was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for his part in the 2009 slaying of the son of the owner of Romeo’s Pizzeria.
  • Mineo and Frank LaCorte, 29, of Ozone Park, an alleged Gambino crime family associate, targeted the home of Bartolomeo Antoniello,and conspired with two other men to rob the home and steal cash from the business. It was one of several Queens homes that the group had planned to rob during the summer of 2009.
  • The Juniper Park Civic Association honored Joanne Ruvolo a college student who saved the life of a 2-year-old girl she saw choking at Met Food in Middle Village. She did the Heimlich maneuver until she cleared the obstruction and the girl was able to breathe again.
  • A 15-year-old girl was repeatedly raped and forced into prostitution as part of an operation run out of an Ozone Park house. Police made several  arrests at 83-14 101 Ave.
