  • A South Ozone Park man who sexually abused his neighbor’s 13-year-old son in April 2010 was released from prison only to move back into his home on 149th Avenue — just up the block from his victim, and across the street from Centerville Playground,
  • Members of a South Richmond Hill Sikh temple looked to increase safety around their religious building in anticipated fear of hate crimes.
  • Albert J. Baldeo, a Democratic District leader for Richmond Hill and Ozone Park, faced corruption charges for mail fraud conspiracy and obstruction of justice. The Democratic district leader is accused of using false donors to add illegal campaign donations to his failed 2010 campaign for the City Council. He attempted to fraudulently increase the amount of matching funds provided by the city.

  • Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, a 21-year-old Queens man was arrested for an alleged attempt to bomb the New York Federal Reserve Bank on Liberty Street in lower Manhattan on behalf of middle-eastern terrorist organization al-Qaeda.

  • A massive manhunt for the parolee who murdered a Nassau County Cop and an innocent motorist  ended when police nabbed the suspect after he shot himself several hours following the incident. Darrell Fuller, 33, shot and killed Emergency Services Officer Arthur Lopez, 29, near a Mobil station on Jamaica Avenue and 241st Street in Bellerose Terrace.
  • Smokey Oval Park was the spot where hundreds of community members crowded onto the grass for a candle light vigil dedicated to four young boys killed when a car driven by their friend went out of control. The driver survived the accident.
  • Joe DeLuca, 26, a girls basketball coach at Christ the King high school was arrested earlier this month after police found a large stash of drugs in his Maspeth apartment.

  • Principals, teachers and parents reported traffic nightmares outside schools in South Ozone Park, Howard Beach, Middle Village, Forest Hills and in other neighboring communities. Claiming the combination of overcrowding on the streets, lack of signage and enforcement and the general disregard of people picking up their children presents clear and present danger to anyone walking on the street at drop off or dismissal.
  • Thirty kids were injured when a student from Junior High School 226 released pepper spray in the cafeteria, causing several to be hospitalized.
