Howard Beach Kiwanians are celebrating a proud achievement this week after the Queens West Kiwanis Club held a regional meeting in Astoria to elect what the Kiwanis hold as one of their most important and distinguished officer position s within the Kiwanis organization, that of Lieutenant Governor.

Further, it is also considered an outstanding achievement of the individual club to have one of their members be elected to the position.

The club was overjoyed to learn that Steve Sirgiovanni, member and past president of the Howard Beach Kiwanis was elected to serve in the role of Lt. Governor in a division with over 400 members.

Fifteen clubs including those from Howard Beach, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven, Forest Hills, Rego Park, Maspeth, Middle Village and Glendale gathered to elect their Lieutenant Governor for 2013.

Among the primary duties for the Lt. Governor is to set goals for membership and recruiting. Sirgiovanni will also be acting as a liason between his division and International Kiwanis clubs. But perhaps the role he takes most seriously is the one that has him overseeing the community service projects within the membership.

And Sirgiovanni is no stranger to community service in fact many around him say that’s all he thinks about.

His recent volunterism during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy has found Sirgiovanni being recognized by Councilman Eric Ulrich, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder, the Lindenwood Alliance, and numerous other community groups.

Despite suffering personal loss and hardship through the storm Sirgiovanni made himself available to participate in an organize and equal amount of efforts to supply medical supplies, food, clothing, gasoline, transportation and anything else you could think of.

Councilman Eric Ulrich said of him, “Steve Sirgiovanni is a terrific guy and the Kiwanis couldn’t have selected a better person for the job.” Ulrich who is himself a member of the club continued, “I know he’ll do an outstanding job because he embodies everything Kiwanis stands for.

When asked how he felt about his election, Sirgiovanni was much more eager to talk about the next thing in line. “It feels great,” he said, “that your peers trust you,” he chuckles to himself and continues, “but what’s even better is that they know their gonna have to work harder now,” he says with a big smile and a bigger cigar coming out of it.

“This is gonna be a good year,” says Sirgiovanni. “A real good year.”
