Books in Danger

Caution tape was stretched across bookshelves and signs were posted to warn library patrons that the resources of the library are under siege by the proposed NYC budget. They are being urged to sign petitions across the borough. Photo Courtesy of the Queens Public Library.

Although the Queens Library staged an advocacy event on Monday at the Astoria branch, the serious message it sent is a threat to every library across the borough. “ What Could Happen” was a measure taken by elected officials, community leaders and library staff to demonstrate the potential danger to the existence of the library.

The city is trying to cut $29.6 million dollars from library budget starting July 1.

If the cut goes through, it would be the largest in the library’s history. Library services will be severely impacted, certain community branches would close and hundreds of library jobs would be lost.
