Howard Beach Steps Ahead – Community walk raises $70K to wipe out Type 1 Diabetes

The International Society of SS. Cosma and Damiano, in conjunction with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), held the Fifth Annual Walk for a Cure on Saturday morning. The 5K Howard Beach walk is one of more than 200 national events across the country aimed at raising funds to eradicate Type 1 diabetes, a disease which strikes more than 15,000 children and 15,000 adults each year.

Society President Joe DeCandia praised the crowd in attendance, noting that they had raised more than $70,000, despite the fact that the community was decimated by Hurricane Sandy. “This really shows the level of dedication and commitment we have to our goal,” DeCandia said. “We will see this disease wiped out. And soon.”

The walk has raised over a half million dollars since its inception which is applied directly to research.
