RHCA President, Margaret Finnerty called Ariola the definition of a good civic leader and community supporter. “People like Joann, that have been here for the long haul, understand what it takes,” said Finnerty. “Remembering her service over the last twenty years certainly lends itself as a role model for other people to get involved.

Ariola was also recognized recently by the Howard Beach Kiwanis who gave her the organizations coveted Clem Vicari Award, also for community excellence.

Ariola’s civic and community commitment began back in the 1990’s as a part of the Cops on Bikes program and the cleanup of Liberty Avenue. Professionally she has held several positions in government and administration including acting as the Assistant Commissioner of the Mayor’s Community Assistance Unit. She founded the Lindenwood Alliance and currently serves as its president, in addition to serving on Community Board 10.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Ariola was especially active with organizing food, toy and clothing drives in conjunction with the Alliance, the business community and the River Fund.

At RHCA meeting Ariola was also recognized with a resolution from State Assembly members Phil Goldfeder and Mike Miller for her outstanding community service and by Councilman Eric Ulrich with a proclamation from the City Council for her work in the community. The New York State Senate recognized Ariola for her work as the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Jamaica Hospital.

Assemblyman David Weprin arrived after the other elected to present her with a certificate for community excellence. He took the mic briefly after listening to his colleagues offer their praises. “What else could I say?” Weprin shrugged, “We all love Joann.”
