After being thrown from his motorcycle in an accident on the Van Wyck Expressway on Sunday, Community Board 9 member Etienne David Adorno is setting all his sights on recovering, his mother said this week.

Adorno, a Woodhaven native who is also a member of the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association, is being treated at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center after he sustained spinal injuries and abrasions in the accident that happened after a car swerved in front of him, said the civic leader’s mother, Miriam Colon.

The 28-year-old is dealing with quite a bit of pain, and will likely have to wear a full body brace for several months, but Colon said her son was fortunate to have avoided life-threatening injuries.

“He was very, very lucky,” she said.

After the vehicle abruptly drove in front of Adorno, Colon said her son attempted to maneuver out of its way – which is when he crashed and then blacked out. The family is waiting for the police report to learn whether the car’s driver stayed at the scene.

“For me as a mother, it was a shock,” Colon said. “We’ve been going day by day.”

There has been an outpouring of support for Adorno from community leaders and other residents, including a number of people who have gone to visit Adorno at the hospital. He was recently released from the surgical intensive care unit and is now in a private room.

“I’m so grateful for the folks who’ve expressed concern and come by,” his mother said.

Once he is released from the hospital, Colon said her son will be in rehabilitation, particularly to learn how to navigate the world with a full body brace.

The young civic leader recently was a Democratic candidate for state Assemblyman Mike Miller’s (D-Woodhaven) seat representing the 38th District. He also served as an aide to Councilman Robert Jackson (D-Manhattan).
