Attention Young Writers! Queens literary journal sponsors contest for students

Students in grades three through 12 who love nothing more than putting pen to paper – or perhaps fingers to keyboards – it is your chance to make your mark in the literary world.

“Newtown Literary,” a semi-annual journal, is sponsoring a “Queens Young Authors & Poet” contest and is welcoming submissions from fledgling writers through Dec. 20.

The contest will award prizes for best prose and best poetry in three grade categories: third through fifth, sixth through eighth, and ninth through twelfth.

There is no entry fee, but the journal requests that contestants limit themselves to one entry in either the prose or poetry category. For the prose category, contestants may submit one story or work of creative nonfiction on any topic. There is a limit of 5,000 words.

Contestants may submit up to three poems in the poetry category; there is no word limit.

First place winners will be published in the literary journal’s Spring/Summer 2014 issue, as well as on the publication’s website.

Those who receive second and third place and honorable mention will be published online.

All winners will be invited to read their work at the Queens Youth Authors & Poets awards ceremony in June 2014.
