Maspeth High School’s Theater Department is tackling its very first musical this Thursday and Friday as it presents Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award winning Broadway musical, “Into the Woods.”

The musical, which has been produced countless times since its 1987 debut on Broadway, weaves a humorous narrative from classic fairy tales including “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Rapunzel,” “Cinderella,” and others.

The show’s main action focuses on a baker and his wife who must complete various tasks assigned by a witch before they are able to have a child. And, on the couple’s journey to complete the witch’s tasks, they meet numerous fairy tale characters from Little Red Riding Hood to Cinderella.

"Into the Woods" features a variety of characters from classic fairy tales.

Maspeth High School’s theater director Erick Young said he was excited to be presenting the school’s first musical.

“As a new school in the Maspeth community, we look forward to presenting a show that everyone in the school can bring their families to and enjoy,” Young said.  “It’s exciting for us because we can share some of the high quality work that our students have developed with everyone in town, not only the friends and families of our students.”

Performances of “Into the Woods” will be at Maspeth High School on Thursday, Feb. 6 and Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults. Maspeth High School is located at 54-40 74th Street.
