U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn) visited Saint Thomas the Apostle School in Woodhaven last Friday and presented the students, teachers and staff with an American flag that was flown over the United States Capital in Washington D.C. for the school.

The request for the flag was made on behalf of the school by Mary Farley, 10th District President of the American Legion Auxiliary. Saint Thomas the Apostle School has a close relationship with the American Legion Post 118 in Woodhaven, including working with the post on a special Flag Day celebration each year.

Velazquez’s visit coincides with the closing of Catholic Schools Week, which began Sunday, Jan 26 and was celebrated with various activities that included a prayer service, student appreciation day, and a visitors day – all of which centered around the theme, “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Service and Knowledge.”
