Ozone Park Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run: Police

Police are on the lookout for two drivers who hit and killed a 40-year-old bicyclist in Ozone Park Sunday night.

After running in the unidentified victim near 90th Street and Rockaway Boulevard just after 9:30 p.m., the drivers took off, according to police.

The NYPD said a black Mercedes Benz van was traveling in the same direction as the victim when it sideswiped the biker, after which the man fell and was run over by another vehicle.

According to police, the driver of the van stopped for a moment, left the vehicle, but returned and fled westbound on Rockaway Boulevard.

The victim was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Bicyclists, as well as pedestrians, have long voiced concerns about Rockaway Boulevard, and part of major roadway will become a designated slow zone in August, city officials recently announced.

As part of the slow zone effort, the speed limit will be reduced from 30 to 25 miles per hour on Rockaway Boulevard from 75th Street to Farmers Boulevard.

Other dangerous streets are slated to undergo the same type of speed reduction, including Northern Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue.
