Attention Bookworms! Summer Reading Challenge is Around the Corner

As students prepare to bask in the freedom of no school for the next couple of months, an area legislator is reminding them that it still pays to pick up a book – and more than every once in a while – this summer.
Assemblyman Mike Miller (D-Woodhaven) announced the Assembly’s annual Summer Reading Challenge is just around the corner. Each year, the Assembly partners with the state libraries to encourage children to continue flipping pages after the school year ends.
Upon completion of the Summer Reading Challenge, children will receive a state Assembly Excellence in Reading certificate.
“Education shouldn’t end just because the school year does,” Miller said. “… By encouraging kids to keep their minds active, the annual Summer Reading Challenge gives them a jumpstart on the coming school year.”
To participate in the program, children must read by themselves or with a partner for a minimum of 15 minutes every day for at least 40 days throughout July and August. The days can be marked off on a provided calendar and submitted to Miller. Those who participate will be awarded a certificate by mail or during a presentation at school.
