Second suspect arrested in 14-year-old Jamaica girl’s slaying: DA

A second suspect was arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 14-year-old girl riding a city bus in Jamaica, the Queens District Attorney said.

Shamel Capers, 16, of Brooklyn, surrendered to cops last Wednesday and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly playing a part in the killing of D’aja Robinson, who was shot in the head while riding the bus on Sutphin Boulevard, District Attorney Richard Brown said. It was alleged that Capers, along with 22-year-old Kevin McClinton, both fired shot several rounds into the Q6 bus with the intent to kill, ultimately striking the young teen, the DA said.

McClinton was apprehended and arrested in South Carolina one month after the May 18, 2013 shooting in Jamaica for his role in the shooting.

“A second suspect has now been arrested and arraigned in the tragic death of a 14-year-old girl killed on a bus last year,” Brown said. “According to the criminal complaint, the defendant – a teenager himself – senselessly fired into the side of the Q6 bus and then a co-defendant grabbed the gun and also fired several rounds into the bus. By their alleged actions, these two defendants showed a wanton disregard for human life and now face up to life in prison.”

Robinson had just left a birthday party on May 18, 2013 when she boarded the Q6 bus at 125-60 Sutphin Blvd. in Jamaica. She sat near the rear of the bus before Capers started pumping bullets into it from the outside, with one piercing the bus window and hitting the girl in the head, Brown said.  McClinton then took the gun from Capers and continued shooting into the bus, the DA said.

Capers was ordered held without bail with a return court date of Aug. 13. If convicted, Capers faces up to 15 years to life in prison, Brown said.

McClinton was being held without bail and had a court date adjourned for trial until Sept. 22, the DA said.
