A 20-year-old from Corona was arrested and charged with shooting at police back, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Christian Mosquera of Westside Avenue was picked up in Union City, New Jersey on Aug. 6 after a nearly two-month search in relation to the June 21 incident in which he allegedly fired a gun at cops, Brown said. A criminal complaint said the armed man was spotted chasing another person along Lamont Avenue in Elmhurst around 1:45 a.m. that day before ordering him to stop. Instead of stopping, he pointed his gun at the police, fired a single round and fled from the scene, Brown said.
Cops later recovered a loaded .22-caliber Ruger Mark 1 long-arm pistol on the ground near the corner of Lamont Avenue and Gleane Street along with two live rounds of .22 ammunition, Brown said.
“Police officers on patrol in Elmhurst, Queens, during the early morning hours of June 21, 2014, heard gunshots and responded,” Brown said. “According to the criminal complaint, the police spotted a man with a gun chasing another individual. It is alleged that when police ordered the defendant to drop his weapon, instead of complying, the defendant turned and fired at police before fleeing. “
Mosquera was charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and other charges and faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted, Brown said. He was ordered held without bail with a return court date of Sept. 10.
