Citing strong immigrant communities as “crucial to our city’s growth and economic prosperity,” two area elected officials last weekend co-hosted an immigration information session in Woodhaven.

City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley (D-Glendale) and U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-Brooklyn) organized Sunday night’s event in collaboration with City University of New York Citizenship NOW! and the Association of Mutual Help Unity and Solidarity Inc. Held on Jamaica Avenue, the session provided an opportunity for Woodhaven residents to connect with a Spanish-speaking immigration attorney to answer questions and help with the citizenship and residency process.

Additionally, Crowley indicated that she is now offering appointments with a CUNY immigration attorney, who also speaks Polish, at her Atlas Park district office twice a month.

The attorney provides free, high quality and confidential immigration-law services to help individuals and families on their path to citizenship. The one-on-one consultations can help assess participants’ eligibility for legal benefits and assist them in applying when qualified. CUNY can also provide assistance with issues regarding: naturalization, relative petitions, adjustment of status, consular processing, certificates of citizenship, replacement of lost or damaged US Citizenship and Immigration Services documents, diversity visa lottery entries, fee waiver applications, temporary protected status, and deferred action for childhood arrivals.

“New York City was built on the contributions of immigrants—much like my grandparents—and we need to provide those same opportunities to those seeking a better life today,” Crowley said. “Strong immigrant communities are crucial to our city’s growth and economic prosperity.”
