The body of a 60-year-old man with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head last Friday was discovered slumped over in the driver’s seat of a van in the parking lot of a Woodhaven funeral home, police said.

The victim, whose identity as of press time had not been made public by police, was found by cops around 8 p.m. in the parking lot of Walsh-La Bella & Son Homes, Inc. on 87th Street near Jamaica Avenue. According to a published report, no one was working at the establishment when the body was discovered. The lot gates are not kept locked during off hours, and area residents use it to park their cars overnight.

Walsh-La Bella staff declined to comment.

Compared to this time last year, overall crime is down roughly 10 percent in the 102nd Precinct. Shooting incidents are also down about 17 percent. As 2014 wraps up, the only major felonies that have increased in the 102 compared to last year are car thefts and grand larcenies.
