Reckless Driver Facing Murder Charges

A Laurelton man was awaiting arraignment this week on murder, assault, and other charges for allegedly ramming his car into a crowd of people following a fight at a baby shower.

Last Saturday, Kevin Weekes, 21, allegedly engaged in a dispute with others at a baby shower being held at a catering hall on Merrick Boulevard.  Weekes then drove his car into a crowd of people on the sidewalk, killing one man and injuring two women.  The deceased man, Kevin Lewis, 20, was pinned underneath the vehicle and dragged by the car until it stopped at an intersection a block away.

Weekes exited the car and fled the scene.

Weekes, currently hospitalized, has been charged with second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, and leaving the scene of an incident where a death occurred. If convicted, he faces up to 25 years to life in prison.
