Members of the Woodhaven community last Friday evening braved the elements to come together and light the menorah and Christmas tree on Forest Parkway near Jamaica Avenue.

Sponsored by the Woodhaven Business District and the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation, the event was supposed to kick off a weekend of festivities, but the inclement weather forced the cancellation of last Saturday’s Santa Parade.

Dozens of families huddled close to listen to Christmas carols, holiday greetings from elected officials and participate in the traditional reading of Clement Clarke Moore’s poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived just in time, along with some furry friends, including Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, to lead the crowd in a spirited rendition of “Jingle Bells.”

The menorah was lit first, followed by the Christmas tree at the end of the celebration.
