A five-alarm fire last Thursday afternoon tore through the top floor of a four-story apartment building in Ozone Park, injuring five and leaving some residents homeless this holiday season.
It took more than 200 firefighters nearly two and a half hours to bring the blaze under control, according to a Fire Department spokesman. The first of 44 FDNY units arrived on the scene on 97th Street near 103rd Avenue around 4:20 p.m. The fire, which is still under investigation, was contained to the 4th floor and the roof. Several ladder and squad companies used various tools to vent the roof.
According to the FDNY, earlier that Thursday, the department responded to a report of smoke from a breaker panel on the 4th floor. There was no fire at that time, but firefighters “de-energized” the breaker panel, and told tenant to have an electrician come to check it out and make repairs.
