Bookkeeper Gets Two to Four Years in Prison for Taking Kickbacks

A College Point woman, who formerly worked as a bookkeeper for a Flushing truck parts company, was sentenced last Thursday to two to four years in prison for accepting kickbacks from customers in return for falsifying the company’s business records by either deleting invoices or falsely crediting accounts, according to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Laura Greco, 54, pleaded guilty in August to two counts of second-degree grand larceny. According to the charges, during her employment at New York Metro Truck, Greco was approached by customers of the company who requested that she take some of the money they owed to Metro Truck off their accounts in return for cash and other miscellaneous gifts. As a result of Greco destroying customers’ invoices or wrongfully crediting customers’ accounts, the company suffered a loss of more than $1.2 million in customer payments between October 2007 and January 2013.

“The defendant was financially destroying her employer’s business while at the same time accepting a paycheck each week,” Brown said. “The defendant has admitted that she betrayed her position of trust and, as such, the sentence meted out by the court is more than warranted.”
