You again?

That seemed to be the theme last Wednesday night as the 106th Precinct Community Council honored the Cops of the Month who, in separate incidents, collared perpetrators with voluminous rap sheets.

“I’ve said it a thousand times: Recidivists are the ones who do this over and over and over,” noted Dep. Inspector Jeffrey Schiff, commanding officer of the 106. “If you get them, your crime will go down.”

Schiff presented the first plaque to Officer Kyle Crean, whose relentless pursuit of an alleged cell phone thief later led to the arrest of a career crook who also had an active warrant.

Officer Royce Poblete, who is no stranger to the Cop of the Month award, was honored last Wednesday for two separate burglary arrests. Both perpetrators, Schiff recounted, have lengthy criminal backgrounds—including Gabriel Dasilva, 33, who has 13 collars on his record.

Schiff noted that since Dasilva has been locked up, commercial robberies marked by a brick-through-a-window signature dropped significantly.

“I don’t believe in coincidences,” Schiff said with a grin.

According to the latest CompStat figures, crime is slightly up in the 106; but a closer look shows only two of the seven major felonies to be the culprits. Crime is down in every other category compared to this time last year, except in grand larceny and grand larceny auto, which are up 36 percent and 15 percent, respectively.

NYPD Chief of Patrol Carlos Gomez returned to the precinct’s 101st Street stationhouse for last Wednesday’s meeting.

“Seems like just yesterday I walked into this precinct,” said Gomez, who took over the 106 in June of 1999. “Looking around, I see the definition of community. It certainly has a place in my heart.”
