Jamaica Man Convicted of Murder in Botched Carjacking

A Jamaica man last week was found guilty in a September 2011 carjacking that turned deadly when the defendant stabbed the vehicle’s driver in the neck, according to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Spencer Sands, Jr., 38, was convicted last Thursday of second-degree felony murder, first- and second-degree robbery, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property after a two-week bench trial.

According to trial testimony, Sands and co-defendant Misty Wilson, 30, sat with the victim, James Bona, in his recently rented 2011 Toyota Matrix on Sept. 10, 2011, on 146th Avenue in Rosedale. Bona, 46, was stabbed twice in the neck. An eyewitness saw Bona stumble out of the car, bleeding profusely from his neck, and collapse in a nearby driveway, where he bled to death. The Matrix, which Bona had rented because his own vehicle had recently broken down, was observed being driven away from the scene.

The judge set sentencing for April 27, at which time Sands faces 25 years to life behind bars.

Wilson’s murder trial is pending.
