The filing period for applications for Neighborhood Grants to fund projects to improve the community is now open, according to Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder (D-Howard Beach).

The grants, some of which can reach as high as $3,000, are provided by the Citizens Committee for New York, an organization that assists “residents working collaboratively on issues that they identify as important to their communities,” according to the CCNY website.

The appropriations are awarded to neighborhood groups and public school-based clubs working to improve the quality of life across the city, Goldfeder noted. Projects eligible for funding may range from community gardening and theatre and fine arts programs, to composting and tenant organizing.

“We’re fortunate to have very engaged, active civic groups dedicated to improving our neighborhoods here in southern Queens and Rockaway,” Goldfeder said. “The Citizens Committee for New York Neighborhood Grants have allowed neighbors to come together and bring positive change to the whole community. I encourage eligible applicants to take advantage of this opportunity and apply for these Neighborhood Grants.”

Last year’s grants allocated funds that allowed the Pitkin Community Garden to start what the CCNY website calls the “first community compost drop-off site in Ozone Park.” And in Rockaway, Art Ventures received funds to help beautify the Rockaway Artists Alliance T7 Gallery.

The deadline for this round of grants is Jan. 25, 2016. Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Goldfeder’s office for details by calling (718) 945-9550, or by emailing goldfederp@assembly.state.ny.us.
