Two 106th Precinct officers recently were honored by the precinct’s Community Council for their quick reaction to a fast-moving South Ozone Park fire.
Sergeant Nikki Lawrence and Police Officer Jennifer Martinez of the command’s Domestic Violence Unit were named Cops of the Month for September. On Thursday, Sept. 8, Lawrence and Martinez observed a fire at an apartment building on 109th Avenue. They were the first on the scene and went floor by floor alerting residents of the emergency. Due to their actions, the building was quickly and safely evacuated.
“We were on our way to visit with someone in need of domestic violence services when we heard shattering glass and what seemed like a car accident or an explosion,” Martinez said. “We saw people running and smoke coming from a building. We ran inside and started banging on apartment doors to get people out.”
