Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and her law school alma mater, St. John’s University, last week hosted a celebration of Italian-American Heritage and Culture Month in the college’s Marillac Hall.

The distinguished Italian Americans who received Citations of Honor from Katz during the event include Deputy Inspector John Travaglia, commanding officer of the 108th Precinct; Thomas Principe, Esq.; Joseph Ferrara, chairman emeritus of the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Queens in Richmond Hill; Nancy DiFiore Quinn, national 2nd vice president of the Order of the Sons of Italy in America; Paul DiBenedetto, president of the Bayside Historical Society; and Donna Chirico, Ph.D., dean of Arts and Sciences at York College.

Among those also participating in the event were Franceso Genuardi, Consul General of Italy in New York, and Joseph Sciame, president/chairman of the Italian Heritage and Culture Committee of New York and vice president for Government and Community Relations at St. John’s University.

Sciame is shown here presenting the borough president with a commemorative poster celebrating Italian culture in America.
