U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing) recently hosted a Security Preparedness Workshop in Glendale for non-profits and houses of worship.

The event, held last Tuesday evening at the Brewery-Keenan Heisser American Legion Post 1815 on Cooper Avenue, featured presentations by NYPD SHIELD (the City Police Department’s umbrella program for a series of current and future NYPD initiatives that pertain to private-sector security and counterterrorism) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Officials from the 104th Precinct (Ridgewood, Glendale, Middle Village and Maspeth) and 102nd Precinct (Kew Gardens, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven, and part of Ozone Park), as well as their Community Councils, and State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) also took part in the program.

Approximately 40 people attended the workshop that covered such topics as:

  • How to prepare for and respond during and after active shooter incidents
  • How to overcome barriers to preparedness
  • Guidance on creating emergency operations plans
  • Assessing potential roles and actions to take in an emergency
  • Creating plans for preventing attacks and preparing for other catastrophic events

“It is critical that non-profits and houses of worship do all they can to keep their facilities, staff and the people they serve safe, and our workshop provided valuable tips to accomplish that for our borough’s synagogues, churches, mosques, temples and non-profit entities,” said Meng. “I thank the NYPD and FEMA for providing this greater awareness to help address the increased security risks that houses of worship and non-profits in Queens unfortunately face. It is imperative that we be as prepared as possible.”
