State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach) recently announced that constituents wishing to properly dispose of an unwanted American flag can now drop them off at his Howard Beach district office.

Addabbo, a member of the Senate committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, frequently collects flags at his semi-annual recycling events to ensure any unwanted flags are recycled in the proper manner. The senator last week opened a permanent drop box in his 102nd Street office to collect additional flags year-round.

“The American flag represents our country, our freedom, our way of life and everyone who has sacrificed to protect it,” Addabbo said. “This symbol of what our nation stands for should be regarded as the cherished token it truly is, and that includes making sure any old or damaged flags be disposed of correctly. I have been collecting flags at my recycling events for years to ensure they do not end up in landfills where they do not belong, and I am happy to continue that effort here in my office on a daily basis. I encourage all those with unwanted flags to donate them to this drop box and do your part to make sure our country’s flag is never disrespected.”

Addabbo indicated that he intends to expand the number of drop boxes for American flags throughout the 15th Senatorial District – Broad Channel, Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Glendale, Hamilton Beach, Howard Beach, Kew Gardens, Kew Gardens Hills, Maspeth, Middle Village, Ozone Park, Rego Park, Richmond Hill, Ridgewood, South Ozone Park, Woodhaven, Woodside and the Rockaways.

Addabbo’s Howard Beach office is located at 159-53 102nd St. For more information, call (718) 738-1111.
