Katz, Queens General Assembly Celebrate ‘Season of Peace’

Borough President Melinda Katz and the Queens General Assembly recently celebrated the “Season of Peace.”

Inspired by the fact that the three traditional December-January holidays – Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa – overlap this year, the event featured remarks from cultural and faith leaders about the history of Kwanzaa, and the holiday traditions of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Buddhism.

Among those joining Katz (c.) at the event were Robina Niaz, executive director of Turning Point for Women and Families (l. to r.); Joyce Moy Esq., executive director of the Asian American/Asian Research Institute at CUNY; Rabbi Manes Kogan of the Hillcrest Jewish Center; Venerable Tashi Dorje of the Center for Universal Peace; Jagir Singh Bains of the Sikh Cultural Society and Community Board 8; Andrew Jackson (Sekou Molefi Baako), executive director emeritus of the Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center; Dr. Uma Mysorekar, founder of the Hindu Temple Society of North America; and Elder Sharod Tomlinson of St. Luke Cathedral.
