Students returning to school at P.S. 232 on Monday January 2, 2017 will e doing so under much safer circumstances than when they left for Christmas vacation according to Sen. Joe Addabbo.
The senator was notified by the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) that a series of safety measures will be coming to the vicinity of the Lindenwood school which has long been the focus of elected officials
Addabbo sent a letter in October to DOT requesting that speed limit signs be posted near the school, located at 153-23 83rd Street, to alert drivers of the school zone speed of 20 miles per hour. Last week, the Senator learned from DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg that speed limit signs are set to be installed along 153rd Avenue, between 78th and 88th Street, in both directions. The agency will also install a mobile speed camera near the elementary school.
“The difference of only a few miles an hour can be a matter of life or death when it comes to traffic accidents, and there are few better places to be more mindful of this than around our city’s schools,” said Addabbo. “The placement of these speed limit signs and cameras will remind motorists to slow down while driving near P.S. 232, helping to prevent potentially devastating accidents and making the streets just a little safer for both drivers and pedestrians, especially the children. I thank Commissioner Trottenberg and the DOT for their commitment to ensuring the streets around our schools stay as safe as possible.”
DOT has promised Addabbo that the measures are scheduled to be fully installed by December 30.
