A Guyanese man in town to help his family bury his grandmother was shot and killed Monday morning in South Richmond Hill during an attempted armed robbery that also left his younger brother with a pair of gunshot wounds, according to the NYPD and published reports.

Cops found Ricky Kalisaran, 31, and Sunny Kalisaran, 24, around 3:30 a.m. lying on the sidewalk on 124th Street near Liberty Avenue. The elder Kalisaran was shot twice, including in the chest. He later succumbed to his injuries at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

Sunny was hit twice in the back. As of Wednesday evening, he was still being treated at a borough hospital.

According to multiple published accounts, members of the Kalisaran family believe that an opulent gold chain around Sunny’s neck was the impetus of the early morning attack. The brothers were walking into a lounge with other family members when Sunny turned around and started to head back toward their vehicle to retrieve his cell phone. Ricky apparently decided to accompany his younger brother on the stroll to the car.

An eyewitness told the New York Daily News that they saw “two men struggling on a South Richmond Hill street, with one shouting ‘Let go of the gun!’ before a second gunman appeared from a black Mercedes and opened fire.”

The suspects sped away from the scene in the two-door vehicle, blew through a red light at an intersection and plowed into another car — and kept going.
