Federal agents stationed at John F. Kennedy International Airport recently foiled an alleged smuggler’s plot to illicitly import cocaine, according to U.S Customs and Border Protection officials.

Last Thursday, March 16, Mayobanex Ruiz Gomez, a citizen of the Dominican Republic, arrived at JFK Airport from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and presented himself for inspection. During the examination of Gomez’s suitcase he exhibited numerous signs of nervousness, CBP officers said.

Gomez was subsequently escorted to a private search room where Customs agents conducted a physical search of his person, during which they discovered packages that would later test positive for cocaine taped to his legs.

According to authorities, approximately 5 pounds of the white stuff, with an estimated street value of more than $83,000, were seized.

“This latest seizure demonstrates our CBP officers being ever vigilant in protecting the United States from the distribution of these illicit drugs,” said Leon Hayward, acting director of CBP’s New York Field Operations.
