Elected officials joined members of the Sikh community on Friday to denounce an assault and robbery that taxi driver and Ozone Park resident Harkirat Singh sustained at the hands of one of his passengers in the Bronx on April 16th.
Singh said a drunken passenger punched him and stole his turban, a primary symbol of the Sikh faith. Borough President Melinda Katz, Assemblyman David Weprin (D-Richmond Hill), and City Councilman Barry Grodenchik (D-Oakland Gardens) lamented that such acts of hate are occurring with more frequency and stressed that everyone must be vigilant in reporting such acts and in denouncing them fully. Katz also expressed hope that Singh’s attacker, who is still at large, is brought to justice.
