Veteran 102nd Precinct Community Affairs Officer Edwin Martinez was recently recognized by the GurDwara Sahib Baba Makhan Shah Lobana Sikh Center of South Richmond Hill for his contributions and service to the Sikh community, according to the City Police Department.
The NYPD noted that, as a Community Affairs officer, Martinez partners with neighborhood leaders, civic organizations, and religious institutions. Martinez said he strives to foster positive relationships with members of the community and embrace their customs.
“When I enter the temple, I remove my boots and cover my head,” he added. “I always try to be as respectful as possible and observe their traditions.”
According to the department, in anticipation of a recent holiday celebration at the temple, Martinez provided police barriers and no parking signs. Throughout the day, he went door-to-door informing members of the community about the event and providing traffic control. When Martinez entered the center to ensure the event was running smoothly, he was surprised to find out he was being recognized.
“I get to learn about so many different cultures, religions, and ethnicities,” Martinez said. “While it is great learning and interacting with people from different cultures, it is even more rewarding knowing that I am helping all members of my community.”
